Mel, I am with you 100%. I mean no animals any harm, in fact the spca is very dear to my heart, I think they do amazing work, however I have no desire to have a pet. At least at some stage my two babies will be albe to wipe their own bums and feed themselves. :-)

Flicka

LOL, Melly! Dogs are not for you. :-)

Kelli

Oh how I can relate. I feel exactly the same way!

Shannon

different strokes for different folks. Just as you think dogs are a waste of time, I think you spending all that time at the hospital with underage mothers is a waste of time. I donate to animal charities and don't give a cent to human ones. There are enough people doing that already.

Karyn

Shannon, I have no reason to judge you as I do not know you but your words were very harsh! It is fine to not like or agree with what someone does but I feel you were just really horrid with the way you commented.I hope that when you need people one day they will not shun you.

Elaine

Well said Karyn. I will choose to ignore what shannon has said,

In My case I went from a dog lover to a dog tolerator after I had my baby. All of a sudden I became Germ obsessed, and especially after my first baby ( my dog) snapped at my daughter and I almost had a heart attack right there, I decided I can't have pets while I have children.

It's just too much chaos, as you described. The dog will always pee in the sandpit and on her toys outside no matter how much we cover them up. I have to worry about worms and flee's, and when is he gonna snap again.

My parents love my dog though so they have decided to adopt him which I am really happy for.

I love animals, but I can't own one right now. I also don't think you should own a pet if you can't give them all that Love and attention they need.

angel

ooh i sympathise... i am so not a dog person...

Becki

I like dogs just fine, planning to get a big sloppy one when my son turns ten. But good heavens, is it illegal to not like them, so long as you don't harm them or encourage others to?

I hate responding to trolls--I feel it dignifies their remarks--but Shannon: it is possible, if you feel the need to dissent, to do so politely. You could say, for instance, "Mel, I completely disagree with you, dogs are wonderful for the following reasons..." Instead you chose to denigrate the work Mel does to help her fellow people.

Perhaps if you had been adult and polite, Shannon, people would give more credence to your beliefs.

Some people aren't 'dog people', some people aren't 'cat people' and others just aren't 'pet people' at all.

I have four dogs and I love them dearly - when I'm not yelling at them to stop barking or getting annoyed at the dirt they carry in on their paws. It's their willingness to forgive all of my bad days that makes it easier to forgive all of their annoying quirks.

Mama Nabi

I personally love almost all animals (not a big reptile person...). I am not, however, a lover of asinine commenters whether they be canine lovers or not.

Oh how I sympathize with you! Dogs are wonderful, intelligent creatures, I am sure, and they can be really cute and helpful and all. But would never want to be obliged to take care of one myself, least of all over a period of 15 years and more. I find them extremely obtrusive and dependent, and it absolutely disgusts me to have their saliva on my hands or their breath in my face. I clearly prefer cats.

You forgot, they cost you LOTS of money at the vets. Over R1000 this month to be precise. But I would not trade them in. For me the wagging tail and puppy dog eyes are worth it.

I do however understand the sniffing, dependence, dog hair and gob. It is a total life adjustment.

I am just wondering then-why Shannon do you read a blog that you don't have an interest in? I do not like cooked peas-would you like to bash me on that? The woman simply stated they were not for her-not that she tortured them in her free time to relax. I run a rescue for pups and would much rather people decide that animals are not for them and get rid of the animal then banish it to the out of doors and ignore it. Keep up the honesty Mel-it is your blog-everyone might not agree with you on everything-but they are your pages-own 'em girl!

Jeanne

There's no pleasing some people. As one of my blog heroes Dooce said when whe got hate-mail after posting that they'd bought a second puppy "Gee, I thought at least you had to TORTURE a puppy to get hate mail, not just buy one!". I am with you on dogs. I don't severely dislike them or anything, but all that constant attention seeking would do my head in. Slobbery smooches when they're happy, barking when they're excited/bored/angry/scared, dog smell everywhere, chewed possessions, parcels to pick up (or step in, as the case may be...). Not for me thanks! But at the same time I am always petting other people's dogs and talking to them - unlike visitors to my house who feel free to say the most ghastly things about the neighbour's two cats who visit us (strongly encouraged by us!!). "All cats are evil." "All cats should be killed." whatever happened to live and let live?!
