Hi Mel. I have so much sympathy for anyone with backache, because I have so been there. Mine is also related to my hips and lower back and I found out it was an unstable sacro-illiac joint. The only thing that helps when it becomes rampant, is to go to the gym and swim. And it has to be breast-stroke lengths. Not even for that long, maybe a 20-30 min session every day or every second day for a week and then I am fine again. Maybe it is worth a try? It has been such a cure for me. The breast-stroke kick seems to align the hips and sort the whole thing out, in my case, anyway. Strength, honey. Hope you find what works.

Your quality of life is being seriously compromised so I do think that you need further intervention - more than what you would get from a Chiro and Physio - I would suggest going to see a Back Specialist Dr/Surgeon.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I don't want to sound like I'm telling you what to do or anything but I think that you need to go for an MRI. I know that you don't have the 7k right now but tell me this...what if one of your kids needed the MRI? I am pretty sure that you would have made a plan to get the 7k from somewhere.

Also, if your Dr books you into hospital (let's say you have an emergency backache situation and go to ER or whatever) then the MRI can be done in hospital and will be covered by your plan. You would need to be admitted though so speak to your Dr about this - I am sure that they will try to help you.

All the best.

Dear Mel, i have very severe scoliosis - since childhood due to a connective tissue disorder - and find that the only way i can cope is with exercise, but not the kind that puts any kind of strain or shock on your body. Sorry you don't like Pilates, because that has been my saving grace. Strong core muscles are vital for backpain management. Have you considered aquarobics? As i cannot do any normal kind of jumping around, i find this excellent for both cardio and muscle toning and strengthening. I would also suggest getting that MRI done, just in case, but steer clear of any operation unless you have gotten a third or fourth opinion. My experience through many friends and relatives has been that back ops are seldom a success, and often just exacerbate the situation. Having backache is really crap, because it impacts on everything in your life. Hope you get it sorted soon.
